ARE YOU A USER OF ACTIVATED CARBON?

All your Uses must be included in our Registration Dossiers and extended Safety Data Sheets!

The REACH Regulation requires manufacturers/importers of substances:

To include a complete set of Identified Uses in their REACH registration dossier(s),
To include these Identified Uses, with corresponding safe use information, in their extended Safety Data Sheets.

Uses that are not included, will no longer be allowed (unless the User submits his own Registration Dossier for that Use).

Therefore it is important that all Uses of Norit activated carbon are included (as 'Identified Uses').in our Registration Dossiers, and in the extended Safety Data Sheets for our products.

What is a "Use"?

"Use" is defined (REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, art. 3.24) as "any processing, formulation, consumption, storage, keeping, treatment, filling into containers, transfer from one container to another, mixing, production of an article or any other utilisation."

"Use" is not the same as "Application"! In fact, any Application will involve several Uses, representing the various steps in the handling of the activated carbon. On the other hand, a Use can be part of many different Applications. For example, many Applications start with the Use: "transferring activated carbon from bag into tank".

Identified Uses covered by Norit

Identified Uses of our products are listed in the Annex to the extended Safety Data Sheet for the product.

Most users of a Norit activated carbon product will find their Identified Uses in this Annex. Some special Uses are not yet included as they are being worked on.

When receiving a new extended Safety Data Sheet (eSDS), customers are advised to check if their Uses of Norit activated carbon products are included in the Annex to the eSDS.

For this purpose, please unravel your activated carbon application(s) into a sequence of (process) steps. Each step is a 'Use'; more than one step can be covered by the same 'Use' (e.g. if PAC is transported pneumatically (step 1) from tank car to silo, and (step 2) from silo to treatment tank, both these process steps are covered by the 'Use': 'closed handling'.

If your Uses are included, you are ready (for activated carbon).
If you have one or more Uses not included in the Overview, please contact us at REACH@norit.com, and provide the relevant information that will enable us to include also these Uses as Identified Uses in our Registration Dossiers and extended Safety Data Sheets.
