Activated carbon (Norit) is a proven and effective treatment for poisoning.

The resorption of a large number of substances can be limited or totally prevented by the rapid administration of sufficient quantities of activated carbon. Reverse diffusion of toxin through the intestinal wall can also be promoted, sharply reducing the pharmacological half-life of the substance in question. Immediate administration of Norit granules (Norit Carbomix or Norit Carbomix Junior) is advised; This limits resorption of the poison while waiting for the doctor to arrive.

The following substances are strongly adsorbed on activated carbon:

• Medicines such as aspirin, barbiturates, phenytoin, tricyclic anti-depressants, sulphonamides, contraceptive hydrocarbons.
• Solvents such as chlorinated hydrocarbons.
• Plants, berries and toadstools.
• Insecticides, weed-killers, rat and mouse poisons.
• Tobacco (nicotine)
• Household products such as Lysol, detergents, moth-balls and metal-polishes.
• Cosmetics such as nail varnish and nail varnish remover.
