The unpleasant smell of rotting eggs, a typical indicator of sewage gas, is highly recognizable. This odor is caused by sulphur components, mainly Hydrogen Sulphides (H2S), but also by organic Sulphur components like mercaptans. Norit Activated Carbon provides three carbon types for sewage air treatment: Darco H2S, Norit CI 4 and Norit ROZ 3. Darco H2S is a non-impregnated carbon type and a unique product for H2S and mercaptans adsorbing. Norit CI 4 is a Potassium Hydroxide impregnated carbon and adsorbs mainly Hydrogen Sulphides and acid gases. Norit ROZ 3, a Potassium Iodine impregnated carbon type, is a high-quality carbon grade which adsorbs all kinds of sewage gases including amines, which makes it a total solution product. The selection of which type of activated carbon to use depends on the type of odor, concentration of the components and operating conditions.

The activated carbon filters have proven performance efficiency for odor control in sewage gas streams. The deep carbon layers inside the filters result in contact times up to several seconds and operation period of years (depending on pollutants in sewer air) before the carbon is totally saturated and needs to be replaced.
